THE TRUMPET SYNCHRONICITY

Some of the most striking moments in the story came when separate events seemed to line up in ways that felt difficult to dismiss as coincidence.

The archive contains dates, recordings and other traces of some of these moments, alongside my later recollections of what they seemed to mean.

I still cannot say whether these connections represent coincidence, pattern, or something else.

This page follows those moments.

THE EARLIER SOUND

On 22 May 2012, the artist wrote about waking at around 4am in Newcastle City Centre to a strange trumpet-like sound and recording it. He already knew of reports of similar sounds occurring elsewhere and was surprised to become a witness to something resembling the phenomenon he had been reading about.

The exact date of the earlier recording was not initially recalled. A later post said the sound had been heard almost exactly one year earlier. The audio has not yet been recovered for this archive.

RECORDED / LATER RECONSTRUCTED

THE WIDER PHENOMENON

The sound was not interpreted in isolation. The artist was already aware of reports of trumpet-like sounds appearing in different locations. That wider phenomenon belongs to the context in which the personal event was understood, but the archive does not treat the reports as proof that the events shared a cause.

REPORTED / EXTERNAL CONTEXT

THE SYNCHRONICITY

Two nights after the first sound, while staying awake in the hope of hearing it again, the artist watched Red State. During the film a similar trumpet sound occurred unexpectedly. The film itself later identifies the sound within its own fictional context. The significance came from the coincidence: a sound he had been waiting for appeared inside a film while he was thinking about the possibility of hearing it again.

On 21 May 2013 he described Sound Experiment No.2, built around synchronised listening to Unfold The Void, explicitly connecting the experiment to the anniversary of the 2012 sound.

PERSONAL RECORD / INTERPRETATION

WHY IT MATTERED

The experience occurred during a period in which the artist was already alert to patterns, messages and unusual coincidence. It felt exciting, frightening and difficult to explain. The later interpretation became part of the history even though the surviving records cannot establish a supernatural cause.

The distinction matters: an experience can be genuinely significant to the person who lived it without the explanation attached to it being established.

THE QUESTION

What happens when a coincidence becomes meaningful before you know what it means?

The archive keeps the coincidence, the surrounding belief, the later experiment and the uncertainty together rather than resolving them into one explanation.
