NAMING HISTORY
Inq + Adj was an original title used for a track later associated with this period of the work. The title referred to Ian’s brother Ben. In 2016 the track was renamed State + Pending while material was being added and renamed for Substrate Unknown, formerly known as Beyond The Body Computer.
The surviving chronology also contains a 13 March 2019 record for an upload under the form INQ£ADJ. The relationship between that upload date and the 2016 rename remains a point for reconstruction rather than something to silently reconcile.
ORIGIN OF THE BODY OF WORK
Substrate Unknown was originally developed under the title Beyond The Body Computer. Earlier tracks close to completion while Lights Arise was being developed included The Silent Message, Happy Alien Child and Brave New Worlds. These could have found their way into the Lights Arise sequence, but instead became part of a developing body of work beyond it.
Happy Alien Child was renamed Before Light in 2026 after percussive stems were removed. The later concept of Substrate Unknown involved music happening on a less physical, largely beatless level — described by the artist as a kind of base reality or quantum field. This is an artist's interpretation, not an established physical claim.
TITLE HISTORY
Inq + Adj was an intended title later represented in the surviving record as INQ£ADJ, a typing error. The title was subsequently changed to State + Pending during the 2016 reconstruction of material that became Substrate Unknown. The private circumstances behind the original title are not part of this public record.
LATER DEVELOPMENT
Fractalize came later and revisited earlier Lights material using modern VSTs. Gypsy introduced Elektron Machinedrum percussion. Squid brought a more physical drum-machine presence and became one of the more percussive tracks in an otherwise ambient and melodic body of work.
Everything Is A Hologram substantially reinvented material from Lights Arise, including the drums of Cat Stalking and melodies from the earlier sequence. The artist connects this with the idea that the experimental principles of sound might extend into other sensory states. This remains an artistic interpretation.
TRACK ORIGINS / RECONSTRUCTION
The full Substrate Unknown track-by-track chronology is still being reconstructed from project files. The archive will add individual track records when the source material establishes them rather than filling the gaps from memory alone.
