Lights Arise is a sequence of 24 transmissions.

Thirteen were released as Electronic Tonalities For Like-Minded Aliens, with a further eleven completing the sequence.

Taken together, the twenty-four tracks came to represent a significant narrative for Ian — one that only became apparent to him as the work developed.

THE RECORD

The tracks were not necessarily created in their present sequence, or entirely during the same period. Some were started years earlier. Some were revisited for a day or two during the challenge. Some acquired their present titles later. The archive therefore treats the sequence as a later arrangement of material whose individual histories are still being reconstructed.

THE CHALLENGE

The surviving files suggest a mixture of new work, revived unfinished pieces, rapid completion sessions and final challenge-day interventions. This is one reason the artist's recollection of making the album is now being reconsidered against the project files.
