THE SEQUENCE

The twenty-four tracks were not created as a single story. They emerged over a period of time, with their titles developing alongside the music.

It was while uploading one track each day during a later challenge that I began to see something unexpected: the titles seemed to connect, and a possible story began to appear.

That moment of recognition became pivotal to how I understood the work.

I came to realise that my interpretation was only one possible reading of the sequence. The interactive sequence explores how patterns and connections can emerge simply by changing the order of the tracks. Shuffle the sequence and see what appears.

CHANGE THE ORDER

Twenty-four tracks. One recorded order. What happens when the order changes?

The sequence below is the recorded arrangement of Lights Arise. Shuffle it, or drag the tracks into your own order. Then listen to what you have made.

THE STORY I SAW

The sequence seemed to tell a story of life emerging, evolving and becoming conscious.

From the ocean to the land, from simple organisms to increasingly complex intelligence, consciousness eventually becomes capable of creating its own reality.

Then something goes wrong. Life becomes divided — humans, aliens and robots — and Earth enters a kind of deep-space malfunction.

From that disorder comes a call: come together, share knowledge, experience sound as one, create love, ascend, transform and build another world.

In Unfold The Void, even the UFO seems to change meaning — from something external into something that might be the exteriorisation of the soul.

WHY CALL IT A SEQUENCE?

There are several different kinds of order in the archive: when a piece was created, when a project file was saved, when a track was uploaded, when it was published, when the larger sequence was recognised, and when later interpretations were written.

Those dates and events are not interchangeable. A work can exist before it becomes public. A title can exist before the explanation attached to it. A later recollection can describe an earlier event without being contemporaneous evidence of that event.

The word “sequence” therefore refers primarily to the arrangement of the twenty-four objects as a body of work — not to a claim that every element of the apparent story was consciously planned from the beginning.

THE PROBLEM OF PATTERN

If a pattern becomes visible only after the objects have been created, where does the pattern come from?

It could be discovery. It could be construction. It could be coincidence, memory, interpretation, or some combination of these.

A pattern can be compelling without proving intention. Equally, uncertainty about intention does not make the pattern meaningless.

A machine can be exceptionally good at finding patterns in a collection of information. Finding a pattern is not the same as proving that the pattern was intended.
